If you later decide to change the color scheme or fonts used in your site, you'll have to edit every page in order to do this.

Cascading style sheets (CSS) provide a solution to this problem. Instead of defining the Web site design in each and every page, you can use a style sheet to control the overall layout of your site. Then if you want to change how your site looks, you simply modify the style sheet.

What do cascading style sheets look like?
Style sheets are made up of one or more rules that look something like this...

H1 {
font-family: arial,helvetica;
font-size: 12pt;
color: green
}

Each rule begins with a selector, which is H1 in the example above. A selector is often one or more HTML tags, and the declarations inside the rule describe how those elements should appear. The above CSS codes will force all H1 tags on the page to use a 12 pt Arial or Helvetica font in green text.

You can also use classes as selectors, which aren't tied to specific HTML elements...

.orange {
background-color: orange
}

Note that .orange doesn't mean anything special - you can use anything as a class name provided that it starts with a period and is composed of a single word (spaces and underscores are not allowed).

To apply a class to an HTML tag, you use the the class attribute (which was introduced in HTML 4.0). For example, to highlight important text on your page, apply the above style to a
tag...

<p class="orange">Cascading Style Sheets</p>

Note that the period before the class name is not included.

How to use style sheets?
There are three ways you can use cascading style sheets...

1) Embedding CSS codes into the style attribute of HTML tags. Most HTML tags now support this attribute, but by applying styles within your tags, you're missing out on the benefits of keeping your content separate from your design. For example...

<p style="background-color:orange">Cascading Style Sheets</p>

2) Embedding CSS codes using a style block in the HEAD section of your HTML document. A style block is composed of an opening
tag.

For example, you can make your text links change color when the mouse passes over them by inserting these CSS codes into the HEAD of your document...

<style type="text/css">
<!--
A:hover {color:red}
-->
</style>

While this method is better than applying styles on a tag-by-tag basis, it still ties the style to a particular HTML document.

3) Linking external cascading style sheets to HTML documents using a
tag in the HEAD section of every document you wish to apply the style sheet to. For example...

<head>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css">
</head>

Once you've linked a style sheet to your pages, any changes to that style sheet will apply to every HTML document it's linked to. This is where the benefits of cascading style sheets are most apparent, since you no longer have to update every single page in order to overhaul your Web site design.

The drawbacks of cascading style sheets
Right now the biggest problem is the imperfect style sheets implementations that today's browsers offer. Although recent browsers include fairly complete CSS1 support, older browsers - Internet Explorer 3 and Netscape 4 in particular - are not only incomplete in their CSS support, but what they do support is often very buggy as well.

This makes it very difficult to create CSS codes that work across all browsers, since what looks good in one browser may look awful in another.

This is where products like TopStyle CSS editor come in. TopStyle helps you create cascading style sheets that work across browsers by alerting you of problems as you work. If you're using the full version of TopStyle, the style checker will validate your code, warning you not only of errors in your style sheet, but also of bugs in popular browsers that may affect its rendering.

Web Navigation

Web site navigation is such an important part of any Web site that you need to think about it from the very beginning. Good Web site navigation should allow your visitors to know three things: where they are, where they can go, and how they can get back to where they came from.

At all times and on all pages in your site, you must give the visitor a sense of place, of context within the site. Every page on your site should have a header, footer, or sidebar that tells the reader what site they're visiting and where they are within that site.

Web site navigation should be consistent from page to page, so your visitors don't have to figure out how to get places every time they encounter a new page.

Home page
Your site's home page should act as the crossroads, the point of origin for all traffic going into your site. Your home page must link to all your sections (and perhaps directly to some important articles).

Always include a link to home on every single page. This way, if users do get confused, or just want to start over from the top, they're only one click away.

Site map
Don't try to re-invent the wheel. Site maps or tables of contents work for Web site navigation just as well as they do on paper. Site maps are usually pages that contain links to all (or most) of the pages on a site. People understand these conventions, so they find them easy to use.

The nice thing here is that it provides your reader with a one-stop location to access anything on the site. The bad thing is you have to get them there in the first place. This should be your supplemental method of navigation, not the primary one.

Navigation bars
There's no hard rule about how and where to put navigation bars. Because most computer screens are wider than they are tall, and good typography for the best readability demands shorter line lengths, it makes sense to put navigation bars on the left or right side of the screen.

This layout is becoming increasingly popular because it's practical and allows the site to reserve part of the screen (usually between 150 and 200 pixels) for navigation and identity.

Images for Web site navigation
You should never rely exclusively on images for navigation bars. Of course, every graphic on your site should contain ALT text, so even if your visitors have pictures turned off they can still read and use your navigation.

That's one of the reasons why it can be risky to use image maps (a single picture that contains a number of links). Because without the pictures turned on, it's impossible to use an image map.

It's also important to note that you should always include a text version of your navigation bars, as some people surf with images turned off or even with text-only browsers. You'll often see the text navigation at the bottom of the page.

Frames
A common way to keep Web site navigation on screen no matter how much a visitor scrolls is to use frames with the navigation bar in one frame. This way, when users click from point to point, they don't have to reload the navigation bar on each page.

The problem with this is that frames can be confusing for site visitors. It's more difficult to print and bookmark a page. Using frames either prevents search engines from finding pages within a Web site, or it causes them to send visitors into a site without the proper frame context being established.

Frames can also cause visitors with older browsers to be unable to see any of the content of your site. For more information on using frames, see Advanced: HTML Frames.

JavaScript
Another method, if you're not worried about alienating visitors with older browsers, is to use JavaScript for Web site navigation.

In order to conserve space, some sites use JavaScript to open a pop-up window or reveal deeper levels of information when you mouse over a category in the navigation bar.

Many sites use JavaScript to create the classic graphic button effect that shows one image when the mouse is left alone, and another when it passes over it.

For more information on JavaScript, see Advanced: JavaScript. Generally, however, the simpler the better. You want everyone to be able to use your navigation, not just those with the latest browsers.

Web Page Backgrounds

Web page backgrounds are simple, fast, and effective tools to make your site look unique and to remind your site visitors where they are.
Web page backgrounds can be specified in the declaration...

<body bgcolor="#rrggbb" background="image.gif">
Rest of the document goes here
</body>

The bgcolor attribute allows setting of the background color for the document."#rrggbb" is a hexadecimal (base 16) red-green-blue triplet used to specify the background color The background attribute sets an image file that will be tiled across the browser window, to provide a background for the document. Browsers allow the use of GIF, JPG, and PNG images as Web page backgrounds. For more information on choosing the right image format, see Web Graphics: Web Graphics Formats.A browser tiles a background image as many times as is necessary to fill the screen. It will tile horizontally and vertically. If the tile is not as wide as the screen, the browser will repeat the image, over and over, to the right, then to the bottom.

If you want a pattern repeated across and down a page, then creating a smaller tile like the one below will do just that. Remember, though, good Web page backgrounds should have very little contrast, otherwise it will make text hard to read.
If you have a wide background tile that is as wide (or wider) as the screen, but not very tall, it will only tile down the page, not sideways. This is a way to create those popular colored bars along the left or right side of the screen.
Of course, you should make your background tiles wider than the current high-end standard, to avoid tiling across. The examples below are wider than 1280.
Since browsers cache graphics (they store them on your hard disk so they don't have to download them repeatedly), using one or two Web page backgrounds on all your pages will help your site load faster.
Background tricks
Fixed Background
Microsoft's Internet Explorer has the ability to watermark HTML documents, by fixing the background so that it doesn't scroll. To do this, add bgproperties=fixed to the body element...

<body background="image.gif" bgproperties=fixed>

Web Page Backgrounds that aren't Tiled
You can implement this CSS effect by inserting this code into the HEAD of your document...

<style type="text/css">
<!--
BODY {background: #ffffff url(image.gif) no-repeat}
-->
</style>

You can also center the background, however it will be centered as the background of the entire document, not centered on the screen...

<style type="text/css">
<!--
BODY {background: #ffffff url(image.gif) no-repeat center}
-->
</style>

For more information on CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), see Advanced: Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).

web graphic

The main Web graphics formats are GIF, JPG, and PNG. It's important to know the differences and choose the best format for each image, so that pictures look good and are as compact as they can be so they appear quickly on your site visitor's screen.

GIF - Graphic Information Format
GIF graphics format is best for images with only a few colors: charts, graphs, or text set as graphics. The fewer colors you use, the more efficient GIF files are. GIF files...

•can contain up to 256 colors.
•support a feature called transparency, in which one color out of the 256 colors is set to be transparent. This keeps your graphics from looking as if they're in boxes, because the background of the file is invisible, letting the Web page's background show through.
•can be animated. Inside a single file is stored many picture frames and an index telling how long each frame should be shown. Animated GIF is treated as a standard image file, so it is loaded with the standard tag.
•are lossless, which means the image quality is not degraded by the compression process.
•can be interlaced so they appear to fade in, from lower to higher quality, while loading. This gives your visitors something to look at while they're waiting.
•are not good for photographs - you lose quality and the files won't be compact. Use JPG graphics format for photos.
JPG - Joint Photographic Experts Group
JPG graphics format is best for images with many colors, such as photographs or scanned artwork. JPG files...

•can contain up to 16 million colors.
•support variable compression. You can apply more or less compression to each individual image. The more compression you apply, the more quality you lose. While file sizes can be made quite small with this graphics format, you often have to compromise between file size and picture quality. Newer graphics software gives you a preview before you save - this allows you to experiment with various levels of compression to choose the best compromise between quality and file size.
•come in three types: baseline or standard, baseline optimized or standard optimized, and progressive. Baseline was designed for browsers that we'd consider to be ancient these days (such as Internet Explorer version 1). Baseline optimized offers more compression over standard baseline, and practically every browser today can read such an image. A progressive JPG, like an interlaced GIF file, builds as it downloads, going from a crude representation of the image to its finished look. While this is a nice Web graphics format, older browsers don't all support this format.
•are not good for images with only a few colors, such as text set as graphics or images with areas of flat colors. If you use JPG for these graphics, they will be larger than necessary, and look "mottled."
PNG - Progressive Network Graphics
PNG is the newest Web graphics format. PNG files...

•are supported by all modern browsers. These files may not appear in older browsers, so using this graphics format may cause some of your Web site visitors to be unable to see your images.
•are compact and versatile and can combine the best features of GIF and JPG, such as the ability to have transparent backgrounds or the ability to contain images with millions of colors.
•are still not widely used, mostly because they're not supported by older browsers.
When to use which?
Choosing the right Web graphics format can ensure that your images look good and appear quickly on your visitor's computer. Choosing the wrong format makes your images look bad and take forever to download.

The most common graphics mistake people make on the Web is to use the wrong graphics format for their images. But the choice is really quite simple...

•If your graphics have a lot of colors (such as a photo), choose JPG.
•If your graphics have few colors, choose GIF. When using GIF, try optimized palettes that contain only the colors used - they can cut file sizes in half.

Web Background

Web page backgrounds are simple, fast, and effective tools to make your site look unique and to remind your site visitors where they are.
Web page backgrounds can be specified in the declaration...
Rest of the document goes here
The bgcolor attribute allows setting of the background color for the document."#rrggbb" is a hexadecimal (base 16) red-green-blue triplet used to specify the background color.
The background attribute sets an image file that will be tiled across the browser window, to provide a background for the document. Browsers allow the use of GIF, JPG, and PNG images as Web page backgrounds. For more information on choosing the right image format, see Web Graphics: Web Graphics Formats.
A browser tiles a background image as many times as is necessary to fill the screen.
Fixed BackgroundMicrosoft's Internet Explorer has the ability to watermark HTML documents, by fixing the background so that it doesn't scroll. To do this, add bgproperties=fixed to the body element...

Web Page Backgrounds that aren't TiledYou can implement this CSS effect by inserting this code into the HEAD of your document...

You can also center the background, however it will be centered as the background of the entire document, not centered on the screen...

For more information on CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), see Advanced: Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
Examples of Web page backgrounds
Here are a few examples of small tiles repeated across and down a page...

Web Design

What is the best Web site design?
In general, how important is Web design in building a successful high-potential Web site?
Not as important as most folks think.
Your site needs to be clean, simple, and well-structured. People use the Net to find information. The best Web site design includes informative content, simple layout, easy navigation and fast loading graphics. It allows users to search for and locate the information they desire in the quickest and most convenient manner possible.
On the other hand, your Web site design is a reflection of your business, the quality of your product. Web surfers looking for some information not only want the right info, they want it from the right source. So make sure that your site doesn't look like it was designed by a novice.
The following general website design tips will help make your site more professional...
Browsers
One of the first things about the professional Web site design is understanding that your site will be viewed on a variety of computer platforms and browsers. Mostly it doesn't matter, but occasionally it does. The platform issue is much less of a concern than the browser issue.
As to browsers, both the version of the software and the brand are essential. Different browsers display the same page in different ways (or sometimes don't display it at all). Older versions don't support all the new tag additions and modifications. They just ignore any tags and attributes they don't recognize.
Always check your Web design on at least the latest versions of the most popular browsers - Internet Explorer and Firefox. While no site looks identical on all monitors, browsers, and computers, you can design sites that look good on all, but only if you test the site on all.
Loading time
One of the most significant problems that faces Web designers is slow loading time, which often annoys users to the point where they give up and go to another site. So it is extremely important to design your pages to load as quickly as possible, which means keeping page sizes as low as possible.
Internet users are the least patient people in the world, and if your site is slow, they know they can get the information, products, or services they desire at another site.
Keep your graphics down to a reasonable size. For more information on using graphics, see Web Graphics and Web Page Backgrounds.
You can decrease the loading time of your Web site by using common images on your pages, because the images which have already appeared on a previous page will be loaded from browser caches, rather than from the server itself.
If you need to change images from page to page, try to use common elements from other pages. This Web design tactic is especially useful for title bars, which can be broken up into individual images. When a new page is loaded, the elements from the old page are loaded from the cache, leaving only the new elements to be loaded.
Consistency
When developing professional Web site design, consistency is the most important thing to keep in mind. Nothing is more unprofessional in Website design than a different colored background for every page. Backgrounds, colors, fonts, navigation buttons all need to present your site visitor with a uniform appearance.
A consistent Web site not only lets users know where they are, but can also help build a "brand" so your site is recognizable.
Navigation
Regardless of the best Web site design or highly informative content, if your site isn't easily navigable, all your hard development work will be worthless.
Keep navigation simple, and make sure it's consistent from page to page. No matter where you place your menu bar, always include a small text menu at the bottom of every page. For more information, see Web Site Navigation.
Fonts
If your site is straying from the standard fonts that everyone has installed on their computers (such as Arial, Verdana, Times New Roman) the viewer won't see your fonts as intended.
Your users' computers will display your site in their default fonts. So stick to standards.

Resolution
Most of professional Web site designers have better systems than their audience has. The norm these days seems to be 1024x768 although there are still a small number of people using 640x480 or 800x600, mostly because they don't realize they have the ability to switch into a higher resolution.
If your page exceeds either of those numbers, the browser will display a scrollbar. If your page is more than the browser's width, a horizontal scrollbar will be displayed. If your page is more than the browser's height, a vertical scrollbar will be displayed.
People usually assume that most pages will have a vertical scrollbar, and are using it to scroll down pages. But many despise the horizontal scroll, and will often complain if they are forced to use it.
It's a good idea to design your entire page for 800x600, but keep the width of text within 640 pixels. People with older computers will still be able to read your content, even if some parts of the page require scrolling.
Keep looking
One way to the best Web site design is looking around the Web and learning from what you see. That doesn't mean copying, but instead, studying what others have done and understanding what works and what doesn't.

Search Engine Optimization

Before you can start writing your site content, it is essential for search engine optimization, that you first develop the table of highly profitable keywords applicable for your Web site, and the corresponding site structure.
If you have not yet developed them, see Site Content, and especially Site Content: Choosing Keywords for finding the most profitable keywords, and Site Content: Site Structure for building the site structure that is optimal from the point of view of search engine optimization.
Now it's time to fill that structure with content that accomplishes two critical goals...
1) Deliver valuable information to your readers - your visitors must get what they are looking for. Help them solve their problems and quests. Satisfy the whole reason why they are doing the search. You must really know and like the subject for this.
2) Convince each search engine that you are the most relevant (at least in the Top 30, preferably in the Top 10) for the keywords that you target. Keywords are one of the most important things in search engine optimization.
Here are your goals in more detail...
1) Your potential visitors must find you on the first or second page of the search results for your keyword. Otherwise you simply don't exist for that word.
2) Your potential visitors must read the Title and Description that are listed in the search results, and must find it attractive and sufficiently compelling to click to your site.
3) Your visitors find valuable site content that helps them solve their problems, and so learn to trust you, and follow your recommendations, whatever that's a click on the link to an affiliate program, buying your product, subscribing to your newsletter, etc.
If you have developed the structure of your site properly, your search engine optimization work will be much easier and you'll never have to worry about the search engines, because their product is the quality of their results, and your pages help them make their product better...
Your pages are optimized for relevant keywords and deliver quality content to searchers.
No off-target keywords to suck in untargeted customers.
No page cloaking or invisible links or anything else that is not natural for a true content site.
No wasting your time on creating multiple versions of the same site, one for each major engine. Instead, focus on building one "best fit" site that scores well with most of the engines for most of your words. Then spend your time on creating another site.
No multiple doorway pages which are specially created as part of a search engine optimization campaign. The fact is that every page which is optimized to rank well, is acting as a "doorway" to your Web site.
Each page should contain content that is about one of your most profitable keywords. This is the keyword that you want the search engines to rank highly. We'll call this word the specific keyword from now on. As you write the page, you focus upon using this keyword slightly more than your high school English teacher taught you was "good English."
There are also general keywords - the more generic words that are associated with your specific keywords. For example, if your specific keyword is "search engine optimization," your general keywords would be "placement," "ranking," "positioning," "promotion," etc.
You'll never be successful in optimization campaign for general keywords by themselves - there is just too much competition. Even if you win, the traffic is just too non-targeted to be interested in your specific niche.
But if you blend some general keywords with your specific ones, you'll do well when searchers use word combinations. You only need to include them once or twice - you're not trying to get top ranking for general keywords. You are interested in combinations of general keywords with the specific one, which bring excellent, highly targeted visitors.

4) Site Structure

Now that you know what you want to accomplish, it's time to create your Web site structure. Think of your structure like the blueprint for a building. The Web site structure does not have to be fancy. It does not need to be complicated.
A well-organized Web site is one that makes it easy and intuitive for visitors to find what they want. The easier it is to use, the longer users will stay at the site, and the more they'll see of it. Good Web site structure also makes it easy for you to grow your site logically.

Another thing that you should keep in mind is that every page of your Web site is no more than two levels deep from home page (i.e. it should not take more than two clicks to go from the home page to every page of your site). Otherwise, the search engine spiders may not index all the pages.
To make your Web site easy and navigable for both your visitors and your search engine spiders, structure your site like this...

Your home page should link to Tier 2 pages, both within the body copy, and from within a text or graphic navigation bar. Each of these pages can themselves link to 5-10 Tier 3 pages.

This Web site structure should correspond with your table of highly profitable keywords (see Choosing Keywords).
The Tier 2 pages should contain content that is about your most profitable keywords, so the most important pages have the best chance of being indexed first.
The Tier 3 pages should relate to the Tier 2 page that links to it. Their main keywords may be not so profitable.
You likely won't pick the most profitable keywords for all the Tier 2 pages. Some will be too close in meaning. Others may not easily lead to a Tier 3. So try to fill your specific niche and pick the most profitable keywords for most of pages.
This clean, 3-Tier Web site structure yields an easy, navigable site for both your human visitors and your search engine spiders.
Spiders always come in through the home page (as long as you submit it to them). From there, you've left them a nice trail to follow. So they can easily index the rest of your pages.
Humans, however, may find any page via the search engines. So each Tier 3 page should provide a link back to its related Tier 2. And the same for Tier 2 to Tier 1

Analyzing Competitors

So you have selected the best Website concept. It's time to professionally research your competitors and partners. The goal is to grow your keyword list ever bigger, ever more profitable. This will yield the raw material for new keyword-focused content pages.
Add two new columns to your table of keywords...
IDEAS FOR CONTENT
POSSIBLE PARTNERS.
Use one of Top search engines or directories (Google, Yahoo, etc.) to search for each of the highly profitable keywords from the table.
You can also use very interesting meta search engine Ixquick. On Ixquick, a Web site gets one star for every major Search Engine that scores it in their Top 10. So it's a fast way to check all the major search engines at the same time. Web sites with three stars or more really know what they're doing and are not there by accident.
If you are especially interested in finding merchants with affiliate programs, use pay-per-click search engine Overture (Yahoo! Search Marketing). Top Web sites found there are serious and already pay for keywords, so it's more likely that they have an affiliate program than usual.
Review top sites
Review at least the first 10-20 Web sites from the top search results. As you get into this in-depth research, you'll notice three types of sites...
Irrelevant - for whatever reason they just don't fit. If your search on a keyword returns many Web sites that seem inappropriate, it's likely that this keyword won't bring targeted traffic to your Web site. You want targeted traffic unless you are paid per impressions of ad banners.
Merchant - enter in POSSIBLE PARTNERS what kind of merchandise they sell. If they have an affiliate program that fits your concept, enter the URL of the join page for the affiliate program of that merchant.
Content - these Web sites are your direct competitors. They make money through banner ads and affiliate programs.Browse the Web site, drilling down into the content. You may get some great ideas for content on your own site. Enter these ideas into the IDEAS FOR CONTENT column. You can even find an absolutely new amazing idea for your Web site and loop back to analyzing this new concept.Click on the banner ads and text links, following these links out to their destinations, to see what kind of merchants they have chosen as affiliate partners. If a given merchant fits your concept and has an affiliate program, enter the kind of merchandise it sells, and the URL of the join page.
Continue on for the remaining keywords, until you have completed all columns for all of your highly profitable keywords. As a result, you'll have lots of good content ideas for the Web site and a list of merchants who have affiliate programs or need pay-per-click advertising, automatically organized according to each keyword - so you are already arranging in-context text links for your keyword-focused content pages.
While visiting the Web sites have a look at the META KEYWORDS tag within the HTML source code. Most browsers will view the source code of a Web page by right clicking your mouse, and choosing something similar to VIEW SOURCE from the menu.
Many Web sites make a common mistake of listing tons of different keywords. You can get some good ideas for broadening your own list of keywords from your competitors.
Check the effectiveness of new added keywords (see previous step: Choosing Keywords), remove unprofitable ones and loop back to analyzing search results for these keywords.
Repeat this process of adding highly profitable keywords until you're getting only duplicate words - that's the sign that you've exhausted this technique.

Choosing Keywords

The goal of choosing keywords is to build a table of keywords that can bring targeted traffic to your Web site and are often searched for, but still not so competitive as to make a top ranking next to impossible.
Start with the Web site concept that excites you the most and create your original list of keywords. Write down all the words and phrases that you think are related to this concept and can be used by people when they search for your Web site.
When choosing keywords, don't limit yourself to single words. Statistical research has shown that most people search using multiple-word keywords composed of two, or even three, words in order to get more targeted results.
Try to look at the Web site from the visitor end. Who are they? What are they trying to do? What other stuff do they look for? Figure out what problem your target market is trying to solve when they do a search. Your Web site should solve that problem.
What other keywords would they look for? Add them to your original list. You can add a whole new major direction, and income stream, to your Web site simply by thinking about your target's other needs.
Open any text editor or spreadsheet program and create three columns...
Keyword.
Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI) - a rank based on how popular the keyword is, and how much competition it has.
Info - the kinds of Top Web sites found by Google.
How to get the right keywords
There's a remarkable online tool that will assist you in choosing keywords and estimating their popularity on the Internet.
Go to WordTracker and start the free trial. Then go to the Keyword Universe. WordTracker will guide you through 4 steps:
Step 1. Type in your first keyword, and click on the "Proceed »" button. WordTracker will display a list of keywords related to the word that you've typed in.
Step 2. Click on the first word which is applicable for your Web site concept and WordTracker will show a list of keywords which contain the word you had clicked on and the number of times they have been used by searchers (the figure present in the Count column).
Add related keywords to your basket by clicking on them, then click on the second related word in the first window. Again add related keywords to your basket. Repeat this process for each of the related words, then click the link to move to Step 3.
Step 3. Your chosen keywords appear on the screen. They are organized in descending order with the most popular first. Go to Step 4.
Step 4. Select a search engine on which you want to do the competition search and click "Proceed »". You'll see keywords from your basket along with their attributes, the most important of which is the KEI Analysis. The amount of competition is determined by searching for each phrase on the selected engine and finding out how many sites come up in the results.
Write down the most profitable keywords (KEI > 10) along with their attributes, click the link at the bottom of the page to try again, clear the basket and type in your next keyword. You may repeat it as many times as you need to analyze all related keywords.
Note:
WordTracker assigns high KEI to words with low Count and very low (or zero) Competing. Don't target these keywords. What good would it do for you to rank high for these words if no one ever searches for them? Select words with high Count (not less than 100).
Choosing the most profitable keywords
Now it's time to pick the keywords with the best profitability. These will be ones with high KEI. A low score means that either not many people search for this phrase, or that there's too much competition for it. Eliminate any words with low KEI, especially if they're not searched upon very often (i.e., Count is low).
Add the most profitable keywords along with their KEI to your table. You can return to Step 1 and repeat the process of choosing keywords and adding them to your table for each word or phrase from your original list.
Your competitors
Go to Google and search for the first keyword from your table using exact match search (surround phrases in quotation marks). Read the listings for the Top 10 or 20 Web sites, perhaps visit them and make brief notes in the third column of the table for the kinds of sites.
Repeat this process for each of the keywords present in your table.
As you review the Top sites, you may get some great ideas for content on your own Web site. You may add new relevant words and phrases to your original list of keywords or, perhaps, you may even discover a concept that is so strong that you decide to adjust your first concept, or even replace it with this new one!
The best Web site concept
If you have several Web site concepts to choose from, build the tables of the most profitable keywords related to other concepts from your list and select the best concept. Here are the factors to consider before finalizing your idea...
Your knowledge and passion - you'll be much more effective if you stick to what you really know and love.
The amount of content - for maximum success you should have 40-70 different highly profitable keywords (i.e., with high KEI). You sould be able to create 40-70 keyword-focused content pages which deliver high-value information and rank well with the Search Engines.
Broad or narrow concept - it will be harder to rank well for a broad concept with several sub-themes than if you dedicated a single Web site to a sub-theme. If the amount of time you are prepared to spend is a limiting factor, choose more narrow concept.
Profitability - review your INFO data. Has the niche high profit potential? Are there many possible partners on the Internet for building decent income through affiliate programs or advertising?

1) Optimal Niche

The only successful strategy on this over-congested Internet is to select specific niche and to fill it with high-value content.
Absolutely everyone has some special interest, hobby, passion. Absolutely everyone knows something that others from around the world seek.
What activities do you enjoy most? What special knowledge have you learned? What do you do in a typical day?
Your goal is to find a subject that you really know and like and that you think would have some appeal for others. Your passion will make work fun and easy. If a concept really turns you on, you won't be working. You'll be playing.
The real opportunities lie in the niches. The optimal niche must be not too broad and not too narrow. Can a single person ever fill a Web site about, for example, "Marketing?" On the other hand, a Web site about "Internet marketing in Guinea-Bissau" will not attract many interested visitors. The right niche lies between these extreme examples.
Have in mind that the search engines are becoming theme based. This means that instead of only looking at the content of individual pages they look at the content of all the pages in the Web site.
So if you choose to develop a broad concept like "Marketing," with several major sub-themes, it will be harder to rank well for the sub-themes than if you dedicated a single site to a sub-theme. The simple recommendation is to keep your niche as narrow as possible, yet still with enough profit potential.
Try to look at the concept from the visitors end. Who are they? What do you want these visitors to get out of your Web site? You should have clear, concise answers to these questions.
Don't stop after discovering the first niche concept. Write down concepts as they hit you - make the list as long as you can. Just write down ideas for site concepts as they occur.
Take your time on this - the final concept will form the foundation for your future success.

Web Site Content

Want to build a successful website?

Creating a website that ranks well with the search engines and pulls in lots of traffic takes as much time and money as creating an unsuccessful low-potential one.

Amazingly, people often start creating a website without building a clear plan of what they want that site to achieve.

If you're going to build a website, take a few moments to stop and brainstorm the best website concepts for you. Take the time to think it through thoroughly before you actually start creating a website. It takes less time and money to do it right the first time than to have to go back and fix problems with your site after it is finished.

The few hours or so that you spend here, in planning your site content, will determine exactly how big your success will be.

Remember, most people fail in any business because they don't plan adequately. So invest the time now to maximize your returns later.

Four steps of planning your site content...
1) Optimal Niche
Discover the correct niche for your website and you won't be working, you'll be playing.

Your goal is to find a subject that you really know and like and that you think would have some appeal for others. Why? Because you’d have to spend a certain investment to generate the visitors that you need. For example, you will set a budget of $50 per week, and you have set out to pay the PPC program $0.05 per click. This means that, more or less, your PPC campaign will generate 100 visitors for that week. 100 visitors may not be a lot, but if you’re willing to spend that much, the reasoning that most internet marketers have is: why not? But here’s the catch. How can you be sure that those 100 visitors are what you can consider as quality visitors? How can you be sure that those 100 visitors will actually equate to profit somewhere down the line, if not immediately? But An AdWords Campaign Can Be Very ProfitableDon’t get me wrong, however. An AdWords campaign can be very lucrative. It can create a windfall of profits for your online enterprise… if you know how to play the game. The fact is, a lot of people fail with an AdWords campaign because they do not know how to proceed with the same. Whenever you are dealing with opportunities that require a stable and consistent injection of investments, you are playing with fire. If you do not take the necessary precautions, you will get burned. How Can You Succeed With The AdWords Gamble? The first step in conquering the AdWords game is in preparing your mindset. If you’re expecting immediate profits, then give up on this option right now. Though immediate sales is very much possible, bear in mind that there are more ways by which you can earn from your AdWords campaign. The visitors you will be able to generate from your AdWords campaign are good for three things:1. As immediate customers if they’d decide to buy something from you as soon as they visit your website;2. As leads you can capture and follow up on so that they may decide for themselves if they’d want to purchase your future offers or not; and3. As catalysts for a viral marketing campaign which will eventually spread the word about your business – free of charge. With these in mind, you can now maximize the value of every click. If you’d be willing to pay $0.05 for every click, we must ensure that we get the most out of our $0.05.Building Your Website Based On The Proper MindsetHaving the determined the true worth of each click, you can now proceed to building a website that will capitalize on everything that every click can offer.Playing the AdWords game is not just about bidding for keywords and drawing your credit card to pay the program for every visitor they’d send your way. Your website should likewise be optimized to make the most out of every visitor that you will be able to generate.A direct sales page is great for immediate sales. But what if your visitors aren’t interested with the products you currently have?Alas, you can establish an opt-in system and integrate the same in your website. This way, you’d be able to capture the contact details of your visitors so that you can send them an email in the future promoting your other products. You can even use this method to warm them up for a future sale. You can also give them a valuable product for free. This way, they’d be encouraged to tell the members of their respective network about your website, and you’d be able to generate a lot of new visitors – without spending a single cent this time.Indeed, you can use your AdWords campaign in such a way that no visitor will be totally lost, even if they won’t decide to purchase any of your offerings for the time being.

How to Optimize Web Pages for AdSense Ads

If you are using Google AdSense or any similar program for earning revenue from your web site, then it is high time you realize the secrets of earning high Click Through Rate hence high revenue from your web pages. If you keep following points in mind then you may be able to increase your revenue appreciably. Page Content• AdSense can't interpret images without captions, the value of alt attribute in the img tag and surrounding text, so keep images to a minimum. If you are forced to use images, use proper captions and alt attributes.• A single page of yours should have preferably same content to get more contextually relevant ads. Segregate pages having different content.• Choose keywords on your page carefully. Certain keywords have a higher CPC. Page Size• Just have the right amount of content on your web page.• If you have a large amount of content on any topic, still keep the pages short, because same amount of content spread over smaller pages make room for more pages. More pages mean more place for advertising meaning more revenue. • However, keep in mind that if you breakup any article unnecessarily into more pages, it may be irritating to the viewer. Hence, choose placing your same type of content on different pages carefully e.g. If there is a natural break in the content, or the paragraph heading changes, the content may be spread over different pages.• Keep the page width in mind. Cater for people who still keep their screen size to 800x600 or less. As far as possible, avoid requirement of horizontal scrolling. Refresh Page Content Regularly• Search engines really appreciate new content. Take a bit of effort to provide content that appears new. You may not be able to change the reference content however; you can have RSS feeds from relevant sites to refresh the content regularly.• The idea behind fresh content is that people should keep coming back to your site again and again. Ad PositioningStudies have shown that ad positioning is crucial to content revenue generation. Positioning means the physical position of an ad on a web page, the size of the ad, and also which page(s) on a site carries an ad.• You need to tweak your ads in terms of positioning regularly till a design that gives you the best CTR.• Most studies show that ads positioned above the fold at the beginning of the page do better than ads lower on a page as the people don't have to scroll down to read down your Ads.• One major positioning issue is context. Position your ads in such a way that they are contextually relevant and generate a high revenue.• Donot overload pages with Ads. Ad StyleThere is no secret formula to tell you that which AdSense color or color pallete will work best. Results are different for different sites and experimenting and monitoring the results may give the best option. You can chose two options that you can choose: • Use the color palette to match your site, this way, some users may click on the ads because they think they are part of your site, not ads. This is a small XML file that sits on a website and provides information for Googlebot when it comes to visit. Is this file useful? What does it do? How do I create one? How do I get Google to find it? Well, let me tell you. Firstly, the general consensus on whether or not a Google Sitemap is useful is that, well, the jury is still out. The official stance from Google is that this entire program is in Beta so there are no promises or guarantees. Perhaps by understanding what this file is for we can infer its usefulness. A Google Sitemap is, essentially, an XML file that contains information on all the web pages in your site. You create this file, submit it to Google, and Google will read it. What Google does from there nobody really knows. You can specify certain parameters in the file such as the location (URL) of your web pages, when they were last modified, how often the pages are updated, and what each page's "priority" is. Perhaps Google is relegating these Sitemap submitted results to a secondary index where they compare the results to their live index. This might let them know how people use (and abuse) the program. It is my opinion that the vast majority of participants in this program are website designers and marketers who are trying to give their clients a teenie-weenie leg up on the competition within Google. That's not to say that there isn't any value, though. It is possible that by telling Google where all of your web pages are you can improve your web page saturation in their index. This may indirectly improve your rankings by getting an unlinked or deeply linked page into the index that wasn't previously there. But as I mentioned earlier, it's difficult to know if Google is even using Sitemap information in their live index. So now that you've decided that you want to create and submit a Sitemap of your own, here's how:
Firstly, you need to create your XML file. Don't bother doing it yourself. There is an excellent free onlineutility at www.sitemapbuilder.net. You must now submit the Sitemap to Google. Visit www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/login and login with your Google account. Don't have one? Don't worry - that's free, too. Once you've logged in you can add as many Sitemaps as you like.
Don't forget - whenever you update your website (by adding, removing or relocating web pages) be sure to repeat this process. You won't need to resubmit your sitemap to Google, though.

Web Site Award!

Most entrepreneurs are constantly upgradingand changing web site content and design. But how accurate and professional is the content as a whole? A great way to find out is to apply for a site award..No Kidding! You'll be amazed at the informationyou may not have. This includes a broad range of items consistent with site design.I started my home business eight months ago andfinally tried for an award about two months ago.I was rejected of course and the reason was lackof contact information and a lottery link, plus anaffiliate program not consistent with their idea ofa professional, quality web site.I did not reapply for this particular award again.I continued to upgrade and change my site contentand design until a couple days ago when I noticed an award of excellence on a web site and decidedto try again. This time,I was rejected again, but fora new reason,in addition to no contact information or hours of operation,I had NO PRIVACY POLICY!This time I took things a little more seriously.I wentto their qualifications site and read them.I do not know how I went this long without a policy. The contact information was in my newsletter for eight months and yet I failed to put it on my web sitebecause I was skeptical about viewers seeing mypersonal information!I immediately went to my site and added the requiredinformation and then reapplied...My site now carries a banner for the Award of Excellence for aPennsylvania business! Now if indeed I have held your interest to this point, hold on for some very important information that will give you the prestige and your visitors will feel confident at your site.Take this list the next time you update or do any changes to your site.1] Be sure your contact information is on your mainweb page.[Company name, your name, address, telephone and /or fax, and e-mail address.2] Add your hours of operation. If you are a home-basedbusiness, set the hours to the time you are available.I set mine from 9am-3pm.EST. [Include the time difference.]3] Compose a Privacy Policy.I will share mine as a sample to view.http://www.homebizandmore.homestead.com/privacy.htmlInclude your sincere promise to protect your potentialcustomers from SPAM. Keep their information confidential!4] Always proofread and edit your content for commonerrors: spelling, punctuation, capitalization, sentencestructure, etc. 5] Check to be sure all links work.Links sometimes needupgrading or a mistake may be made when they are entered.6] Background and font design are as important as thecontent itself. Be sure the background is compatiblewith the font color. Never use fluorescent or brilliant fontcolor, or background. These shades of color often blind the eyes and makereading difficult.7] Although banners are becoming the "IN" thing on theInternet, they have their down side.Load time of a pageis considerably slower if the page has many banners.Visitors will leave the site if load time is slow..thus losingpotential customers.Sites are often rejected for having a"Banner Farm." Instead, try writing an interesting paragraphor two about the link and then link to the site.More often, than not,a short description will prompt the visitor to click. Overload of graphics, and clip art are also related.8] A vital part of any web site are the meta tags, title description and key words. the search engines will neverfind your site, unless you put in these key words. Take a look at each page and identify these words. You will needmany of them, take your time to assemble the list of up to 150 words, or related words that are used most often.9] Be careful of the content on the site, such a lottery games, adult content only, if you wish to apply for an award. It might come to getting rid of this type of content.10] Free hosting can often be a downfall as well. You shouldhave your own domain available at minimal cost if you arewell established. I am still using free hosting, but willupgrade in the near future. This list of ten qualities is by no means all that some ask forwhen you apply for an award. Some of the tips are not required, but are necessary for a quality web site.

How to get TRAFFIC on your new site

You’re all pumped up! You’ve been working hard on a new layout and have tons of ideas and wonderful miracles to show the online world. One problem, how do you let people know you exist? When I first started Pixel2life.com back in January 2004, I already had a large amount of friends in the gaming community that I knew would visit my site to check it out, but I wanted to get a targeted audience of visitors. People that would be interested in the content I had to offer them. I love my friends in the gaming community (some of which I’ve known for over 6 years), but only a small portion of them really cared about design. So through trial and error, I’ve found ways to increase my traffic by targeting the proper audience without having to pay for it. These methods don’t compare to buying targeted traffic, but it’s the next best thing. P2L is not a profit oriented website, so I don’t exactly have tons of cash to spend on Ad campaigns.First off, I must stress the importance of a quality design and quality content. You can draw as much traffic as you want, but without a quality website that will interest your guests, you’ll never make it to their coveted Bookmarks. In the case of design oriented websites for example, there are millions of personal websites that have a few wallpapers, a personal portfolio a shoutbox , and loads of spelling errors. What makes your site better than the rest that would warrant someone to re-visit? Be original, provide quality content, and update often. It’s that simple. If you’re not willing to commit to those rules, don’t bother trying to be the next DeadDreamer or Shiver7. I may write an article in the future regarding this topic in a bit more detail, but for now, I’ll assume your site is a smoking gun and ready for the eyes of the world. Before you start anything, optimize your site for search engines. You should have a title, meta keys for keywords and description, and nice full sentences in the body of your site. Keyword density is important and with proper SEO techniques, hits from search engines will grow quite a bit. Make sure you customize each page as required. A page about 3D Modeling should not have the same keywords as a page about your graphic portfolio. And remember to include the main keyword(s) in your title. If you’re not sure what exactly to do, check out these results on Google for keyword optimization: http://www.google.ca/search?q=keyword+optimization&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&meta=For Pixel2life.com, our first month of operation (January 2004) yielded about 200 hits from Google. After spending a week or so correcting my lack of meta keys and keyword density, I received well over 28000 hits from Google in June. This isn’t simply because I worked the keywords, but it had a large hand in it. The other part of the puzzle is reciprocating links. Now I don’t work for an SEO, nor do I pretend to be an expert in the field, but in my experience, the more reciprocating links to Pixel2life.com on other websites, the higher my Google ranking climbs. In some of my main keywords, I wasn’t even in the top 1000, but after a few months of affiliating and spreading the word, I place in the top 5 in many principal keyword searches. Examples include:http://www.google.ca/search?q=cinema+4d+tutorials&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&meta=http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=swift+3d+tutorials&meta=http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=photopaint+tutorials&meta=You can check your google rankings for your choice of keywords at http://www.googlerankings.comAFFILIATE! It’s important to affiliate and get the word around about your site. Do a search on Google for sites similar to your own or have something to do with the topic your site is about and ask the webmaster if they would like to exchange 88x31 pixel banners or text links. If you have a good site, then many webmasters won’t care about your traffic, because they know it will climb in fairly short order if your site is obviously a quality link. I have affiliated with many sites that do not get the same traffic as I do because I love their site and I think my visitors will enjoy it too. So don’t be shy - just ask! It’s not like they’re going to sue you for asking. The worst that will happen is you won’t get a response or you’ll be declined. I’ve been declined many times… it doesn’t hurt, trust me. Don’t send a generic cut and paste email to the webmaster either. Send an email addressed to them personally and let them know you’ve actually checked out their site and why you think you could mutually benefit from exchanging links. Be polite, check your spelling and make sure you send them your details including a short description of your site, current traffic, URL and how you can be reached. So, affiliation is extremely important. Not only will the visitors of an affiliate see and possibly visit your link, but you’ll increase your search engine ranking as well.SOTM, SOTW features! There are tons of websites (Pixel2life.com included) that have a featured Site of the Month or Site of the Week section, usually on the main page. This is a great way to get some free exposure, assuming you have a site that would earn this kind of regard. If you’ve got quality, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t win a few of these features. How to find them? Easy as pie! Get on Google and do a search for any of the following:“Site of the week”“Site of the week” subject*“Site of the Month”“Site of the Month” subject** Customize subject with whatever your site is about – like graphics or programming etc...Here’s a little cheat for you… I won Site of the Week at FTP Planet (http://www.ftpplanet.com) and received 3000 unique visitors the day it was posted in their newsletter, and I still get hits from the archived link. You can post your entry at http://www.ftpplanet.com/cgi/ubb/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Your+Web+Site&number=10&DaysPrune=1000&LastLogin=Innocent advertising is a non-obtrusive way to plug your site IF you do it properly. Check out http://www.big-boards.com for large forums that are in line with your interests. Sign up and check the signature guidelines… staying within the guidelines, plug your site in your sig and start posting! Now, here’s the catch… post relevant information to the forum and genuinely contribute to discussions. Don’t just fly on there and start plugging your site or you’ll probably get banned. Just go shoot the shit with the forumites and let your sig do the rest. This is guaranteed to get you additional traffic. Same thing with every place you would leave a signature. Email, forums, blogs, newsgroups etc… but actually post something worth reading, otherwise you’re just another spamming asshat. The bottom line is that you need to get involved in the community that your site revolves around. Talk to people, learn about your community and make adjustments as you go. There’s no such thing as a free lunch, so you have to work at it. The harder you work at it, the better the results. You’re not paying for anything money-wise, but you will be spending quite a bit of time in front of the screen, especially at first.Sign your work! If you create wallpapers or post photography (YOUR photography) sign your work with your website address. If people like what they see, they know where to go for more.Tell a friend script, and a newsletter is also important (Yeah, I know I haven’t got one, but we’re working on it). Tell a Friend is a little script that allows a visitor to send a pre-made email to someone he or she knows that tells them about your website. The person just types in the email address they want the notice to go to and click submit. This is a nice simple way for your guests to share your site with others if they like it enough and want to share their find :)A newsletter is a great reminder tool to previous visitors to come check out your site for new features and content. Many of your visitors will visit your site and forget about it, even if they really enjoyed their first look. This is natural and a common internet fact. By keeping an opt-in newsletter, you can send a monthly email to anyone that has joined the list and that will remind those “one night stand” people that you’re still around and the site is better than ever.Well, that’s about it for the time being, I hope this helps you get your new site off the ground, or lift your old site even higher. Feel free to post your own traffic grabbing suggestions or comment on the pointers in my article.Remember, be polite, be personal, get to the point, and don't be shy. If your site has quality content updated on a regular basis, there's no reason why you should feel intimidated when trying to share it with others. Just don't spam and annoy people, and you'll be amazed at what happens over the next few months.

Why You Should Have Your Own Web Page

Everyone’s building their own web page, from 14-year-olds producing multimedia extravaganzas in their bedrooms to grandparents putting their family history online. Despite appearances it’s dead simple to build your own web page. More than that, its fun, its useful and it makes your life, online and off, that much richer.
Because you Can
When you sign up with an ISP, you’ll almost certainly get a few megabytes of free web space along with your Internet connection and email addresses. This web space is where you can put your own web pages on the Net, so you’re ready for action as soon as you get your Internet connection sorted out.
If you think learning a little bit of HTML is just too much effort, you can visit sites on the web with extremely nifty automatic web page generators. Decide what you want your page to look like, bang in your profoundest thoughts and it’ll appear like magic in front of your eyes.
Information at your Fingertips
A good practical first exercise in web page building is making your own start page. By putting together a page with links to all your favorite sites, you’ve got all the information you want. Alternatively, you can just upload your browser’s bookmark file to the web. That way, you can get at your bookmarks from any other computer, and you can direct other people there, too.
Win Friends
By having your own web page, you’re out there on the Net where millions of people can potentially come and knock on your digital door. For the most paranoid among you, getting email from strangers might be a somewhat scary idea. But for the more sociable, it can be great fun. And because birds of a feather flock together, the new people you meet through your new web page are likely to be interested in similar things to you.
Obviously, for people to mail you once they’ve seen your page, you should try to make it as interesting or unusual as possible. Having a personal web page also helps you stay in contact with friends in far-flung places, because you can upload photos, audio files and even home movies to your web pages for them to enjoy.
Influence People
There are many altruistic souls on the Net who provide buckets of wisdom on virtually any subject for the sheer pleasure of sharing their knowledge. If you’re knowledgeable about a certain subject, why not put it on the web?
This is where the Net really comes into its own, because instead of having to go looking for people with similar interests, you’ll soon find them coming to you. With the web being the strangely democratic medium it is, you might find you get some big cheeses from your particular field of interest sending you complimentary messages. You’ll have scintillating email conversations that might lead to all sorts of things – lifelong pen-pals, a job offer, maybe even marriage.
Keep the Kids Quiet
Chances are your kids will much prefer building a glittering web edifice on the Net to playing with stupid plastic bricks or rusty bits of metal. Not only will making a web page teach them invaluable computer skills in a wholesome and constructive manner, but also it’ll help develop their literacy and general knowledge.
A web page for the kids is the digital equivalent of a school painting stuck to the fridge door. It’s also a good opportunity to spend time together and bond as you build your own family web page. No doubt the ease with which your children master HTML will be completely humiliating, but that’s part of the joy of parenthood, isn’t it?
Get a Job
Showing you’re savvy with the Internet definitely gets you brownie points at job interviews, especially if you can demonstrate how the Net can be useful to your potential employers. Putting your CV online is a good idea because it means interviewers can get your details directly and you can update it instantly. It’s more environmentally friendly too.
Even if a company you want to work for has nothing to do with the Internet, it looks flash to have a web address alongside all the other details on your application. There’s also the possibility that someone might trip over your CV and mail you because you fit the bill for a vacancy. On top of that, if you produce a particularly impressive web page, you may eventually wind up landing a job as a webmaster.
Show Someone you Love Them
Sometimes the one you love may not understand why you find the Internet so fascinating. They might even become a victim of the ‘just another minute…’ syndrome as you get caught up in the joys of building your own web page, causing all sorts of relationship tension.
Circumnavigate these choppy seas of romance by building an online tribute to the special person in your life. It may sound cheesy, but it’s just like making them their own birthday card rather than buying one. Heighten the anticipation by draping a tea-towel over your monitor and then dramatically unveiling your creation at the right moment.
Broadcast Your Life
A really ambitious home page might include a webcam that broadcasts your life to the world. With one of these gizmos perched above your monitor, you can show your good looking face in real time.
No doubt you can think of far more inventive uses than just pulling silly faces, but remember the weirdo rule – you could get some pretty strange mails asking you to do all manner of bizarre things for the voyeuristic pleasure of others.
Become a Rock Star
Waiting to be discovered? Take your musical destiny into your own hands and whack your audio delights up on the web. Downloading and paying for albums directly over the web will soon become commonplace, so you might as well exploit the phenomenon. Having your sonic chunks available to download also makes it dead easy for any talent spotters to work out if you’re shaping up to be the next Nirvana or simply playing the spoons – badly.
Get Rich Quick
And finally, the dream so many have chased and so few have managed to fulfill; making a packet out of the Internet. Some say the days of simply having a bookmark list which turns into the web’s biggest search engine are over, but there still seems to be room for anyone with a clever idea to make a tidy profit. Many of the successful sites started off as spare bedroom operations and went supernova. If you’ve some sort of small business specialist, you might find the Net to be a lucrative new source of income just through advertising yourself on your web page – but really, with so many other things to be doing with your web space, why would you want to try to make money out of it?

HTML Explained: Tips for Self-Starters

Want to save money while promoting your web-based business? Of course you do. Here's some advice on the matter, from a freelance copywriter who knows: it pays to learn the basics of HTML.
If you're like me (stubborn), you've probably been dodging HTML for many years. All that code mushed together... it's distressing to look at! But here's the thing: HTML is your friend. He might be ugly, but he's a good guy to have on your side.

Once you get a basic understanding of how HTML works, the gibberish starts to make sense. And that's when you'll realize how easy it is to create web pages for your own business without having to 1. pay a designer thousands of dollars, or 2. purchase one of those expensive web design programs.

Let's start with a general explanation. HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. It's the basis for every single design element you see on a web page: layout, copy, image placement, links, music, animation, etc. People who design their sites using fancy web page creators with buttons and copy/paste features are merely controlling the HTML code via the program's graphic overlay. Underneath it all, the code's still there in its pure form. You can see it if you go to a webpage and then click View>Source from the top menu.

Easy Web Page Creation

You can create a professional-looking web page using HTML and the bare minimum of tools: a text program (such as Notepad) to write and save files in, a Web browser to view the files, and a photo-editing program such as Photoshop.

Ever visit a webpage and then click View>Source so you can stare at the "guts" and try to make sense of it? The text program that opens that page is the same one you'll use to create your own web page from scratch. Keep in mind, a text program is NOT the same as a word-processing program, such as Microsoft Word. If you use Word, you may accidentally save your file as a .DOC, and in doing so, create all kinds of coding problems that make your page look crazy. NEVER create web pages in Word!

Here are three salient points about writing HTML code.

1. Your text editing program does not recognize paragraph returns when you type them with the Enter key. You will separate your text manually, using HTML tags such as <> and <>.

2. HTML code does not differentiate between capitals and lowercase. Your tags can be typed either way and they'll still work no matter what.

3. HTML doesn't recognize Smart Quotes- those curly quote marks that Word and other word processing programs like to convert your straight quotes (or inch marks) into when you least expect it. HTML also doesn't recognize "curly" apostrophes (as opposed to straight ones, or footmarks). If you use these in your web documents, the computer will interpret them as code and fill your web page with gibberish. So DON'T USE SMART QUOTES OR CURVED APOSTROPHES!

Creating a Text Document: the Basis for Your Web Page

Start a new file in your text program such as Notepad, then save it with the .html extension. For example, you might name your file, "myfirstwebpage.html". Later, after you've entered your code into the text program, view the page as it will appear on the web by using a web browser such as Explorer or Netscape. Click File>Open, and then enter the name of your file. Viola! There's the web page that YOU created! The great thing about this feature is that you can keep on saving your text file and refreshing the browser page to track your progress.

Keep in mind that the pages you create and save as .html files won't be available for viewing on the internet until you publish them. This is done by purchasing a web hosting package through one of the major web hosting companies; for example, GoDaddy.com. You're required to "rent a space" for each web domain you own. But that's a topic for another article entirely.

Now comes the fun part: uncovering the "secret" to HTML! HTML is logic-based; and for those of us who love a good logic puzzle, this is truly a beautiful thing.

HTML Tags at Work

In viewing the source of web pages, you may have noticed a lot of these things: < >. They're called HTML tags, and they're what the computer uses to interpret the HTML code.

NOTE: in this article I had to add spaces to all of my HTML tags so that I could display them without actually having them work. There are two HTML tricks to actually "shutting off" HTML tags, but neither of them function properly in this submission box.

The HTML tags shown here will display like so: <> but in reality you're supposed to type them like so:

.

Moving along, a friend of mine describes HTML tags as "on/off switches." An easy example which you may be well-familiar with, is the Bold command. To "turn on" Bold, type <> (but with no spaces). All of the text that comes after the Bold tag, will then be Bolded. To "turn off" the bold characteristic, type < /B >. Any text that comes after the "bold off" tag will unbolded.

It's worth mentioning that in all cases, all text that falls between an "on" or "off" HTML tag will take on the characteristic of that tag descriptor. How much text can you put in between two HTML tags? As much or as little as you want. That means, you can use just a couple of HTML tags to design paragraphs and paragraphs of text.

What are some other HTML tags that web designers frequently use?

<> and < /I > (for italics)
<> and < /U > (for underline)
<> (to create a single line break).

In most but not all cases, if you activate an HTML tag by enclosing it in these: < >s, you must also deactivate it at some point, as in <> and < /I > for italics shown above. An exception to this rule is <>, or paragraph separator tags, and <> or line breaks.

Specifying Multiple Text Characteristics Within a Single HTML Tag

HTML tags work in different ways, depending on the aspect of the design they're controlling. As I mentioned above, you can control all elements of web design via HTML code—page separation, text formatting, image placement, design layout, and hyperlink insertion. For this reason, one HTML tag can include multiple variables. This sounds a lot trickier than it is.

For example, a tag with multiple variables enclosed all in one of these: < >, can be used to format text. An equals (=) sign is used to specify multiple characteristics within a single HTML tag. To tag a section of text for font specs, begin with:

< face=" Using" face="arial" size="2"> (but with no end spaces).

If you wanted to, you could also include a color for the text within that tag. The color is entered in the same way as the font face and size, and is named within its own set of quotation marks either in a basic name such as "black" or "red", or a 6-digit numerical code that begins with a number sign.

So, an HTML tag that designates a paragraph typed in Arial font at the 2nd smallest size of type, in the color black, would look like this:

< face="arial SIZE=" color="black">

All of the type that came after this HTML tag would take on the characteristics above. Once you wanted to "shut off" the font characteristics of that blurb of text, you would type the tag < /FONT >.

Using HTML Tags to Add Images to Your Web Page

Now suppose you wanted to add an image to your webpage. And let's assume the image was already located in the folder of your website where images are stored. In order to make the image appear in your NEW web page, you need:

1. the complete web address of your website (such as http://www.wordfeeder.com),

2. the folder (or subdirectory) on your server where images are kept, and

3. the file name of the image (ends in .jpg).

The HTML code used to "pick up" an image from a source is IMG SRC. As always, it belongs inside those handy bracket-things. So your tag would begin:

< src=" Without" the =" (equals)" src="http://www.wordfeeder.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/wordfeederlogox.jpg">

By typing that HTML tag with the specific web address and folder information/filename within quotation marks, the computer knows the origin of the image, and will then "hyperlink it" into your web page.

If you're ever unsure of the filepath of an image you need, go to the webpage where it's located and then right-click the image. Under "properties", you'll find the complete URL path that must be typed in between the two quotation marks that fall inside your Image Source tag.

Note: you do not need to "shut off" an image tag.

You can also include multiple variables within a single image tag. For example, if you wanted to left-align the above image, you'd edit the above tag to look like this:

< src="http://www.wordfeeder.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/wordfeederlogox.jpg" align="left">

Hyperlink Tags for Email and Website Addresses

Ever wonder how webmasters create live links? A live link might say something like, "Click here for more info!" and then when you click there, you're suddenly transported to a new web page. A live link is simply type covering a website address. Check it out:

< href="http://wordfeeder.com">Visit Wordfeeder for more info!< /A >

That's HTML code for "hyperlinked text". It looks weird, but think about it this way. The first part in that's enclosed in these: < >, is what turns on the "make the following words into a link that leads to the address I am typing here" function. The end tag, < /A > is what "shuts off" the "hypertext linking" feature and will then let you resume typing in normal, unlinked text.

As you can see, by typing a few simple HTML tags, you can create some pretty amazing things. This article is just the tip of the iceberg. I hope that the explanations and examples shown have at least provided a basic understanding of HTML for you. A great way to learn is by "studying" other people's web page code from the View>Source window. You practice by copying their HTML code into your own fake pages, and filling in the "meat" between their "on" and "off" tags with text and images that suit your own purposes. But be careful. If you paste HTML incorrectly, you can totally wreck and corrupt your document.

For folks who want to get into serious design, I highly recommend that you buy a comprehensive HTML guide. Once you get the hang of HTML, there's no telling what you can create!

Google Vs Yahoo Vs Bing - The Major Search Engines

If you want to earn a living on the Internet, you may have to depend on the three major search engines for traffic.

The three search engines are Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Which search engines can deliver higher quality traffic? Here is a quick comparison.

Google search engine.

Google is the most well established search engine among the three. It is used by millions of visitors each month. The primary reason why it is so popular is that it can deliver highly relevant results in a flash. The search results are updated on a regular basis to ensure that the content stays fresh and relevant. If you make a search in Google for a keyword phrase, it's very likely that you will find what you want on the first page of the search results. That's how good the search engine is.

In terms of traffic, Google owns the monster share of traffic. Both Yahoo and Bing cannot match the traffic that Google can deliver. Therefore, many Internet marketers work hard to optimize their site for Google. Some even focus solely on this giant search site. A handful of lucky marketers have reported that they have been consistently earning five figure monthly incomes with traffic from Google alone. So whatever you do, don't neglect Google. Optimize your site to make it Google-friendly.

Bing search engine.

Bing is Microsoft's new baby. The old search engine is known as MSN Live. MSN Live has been unable to deliver much traffic. But since the release of Bing, this search engine is gaining ground very quickly. Perhaps this is due to the large amount of publicity generated by the launch of Bing. Bloggers are excited about the new search site. Webmasters have always wanted a competitor for Google. Bing does look like a strong contender.

Yahoo search engine.

Yahoo used to be second in the race. However, in recent months, it has been overtaken by Bing. Webmasters complain that Yahoo take too long to update its search indexes. Marketers do receive an occasionally trickle of traffic from Yahoo. Hopefully, Yahoo will improve on its search algorithm and make a comeback.

Fortunately, SEO techniques for all 3 search engines are rather similar. When you optimize for one, you are likely to rank in the others as well. You don't have to optimize for each search engine. For instance, all 3 search engines count your back links as "votes". The more back links you have, the higher you will rank in the search results.

If you are unsure of how to optimize your site, check out Google's webmaster guidelines. These guidelines may be released by Google, but that doesn't mean that they don't apply to other search engines. If you create a search engine friendly site, all the three major search engines will send you traffic. Try not to get yourself penalized by Google by observing the guidelines. Google does represent the biggest amount of traffic you will receive from the search engines

How To Submit Rss

One of the best ways to keep users of your website is to have them coming back for more. You can accomplish this by providing RSS feeds. RSS Stands for Really Simple Syndication, and is a coded method of informing website users of new news, activities happening, contests you are running, anything you really want to know. The process of RSS Feeds is relatively easy, when you know how to do it. But for the beginner, it may be a little intimidating to learn how to submit an RSS feed for your website.

One way to submit an RSS feed for your website is to put up a blog or "weB LOG" Blogging software usually contains built in code that will submit your feed to RSS directories every time you make a new post. For some people, however, this can be tricky. Blogging software out of the box can be a little intimidating, and they usually provide very little to no documentation. Hosted blogs like WordPress and Blogger usually contain those built in codes, but customizing your blog to your liking can be difficult.

Another, less used but highly popular, method is to create the RSS Feed yourself. This is done through eXtended Markup Language, or XML. XML is almost like HTML in its design, except for the fact that RSS XML Files contain usually only three or four items. These items are the title, description and link. You can embed multiple items into one XML file, which creates your feed.

An RSS feed is a grouping of items chained together. This is called a "channel" and is referenced by the "channel" and "/channel" tags at the beginning and end, respectively, of your XML file. The last thing you need to do at the top of your file is indicate it is an XML file by using the XML and RSS tags. See your favorite web design book or website on how to do this.

So, you've spent all this time creating your XML file, it works, and all is well, now what do you do with it? Well, you need to submit it of course. The best way to submit an RSS Feed is to use one of the multitude of RSS Directories out there. I won't list any, just google it. Once you've found one, submit your XML file like you would a web page, and within minutes, your newly acquired RSS Feed will be screaming across the internet at the speed of light, both to your current users, and also attracting new users at an alarming rate.

The benefits of RSS are great. You can keep your users informed of happenings on your site, you can attract new users, and you can ensure that your news will get out to the world with

Building Website Steps

Friendship, share photos, videos, create groups and more

Start Creating a Website from Planning its ContentPlanning your Site Content is the initial phase of building a successful high-potential website. Advertising
Most free web hosts impose advertising on your website. This is done to cover the costs of providing your site the free web space and associated services. Some hosts require you to place a banner on your pages, others display a window that pops up everytime a page on your site loads, while still others impose an advertising frame on your site. There is really no hard and fast rule which is to be preferred: some people hate a pop-up window, other webmasters dislike having to stuff banner codes onto their pages, and many people cannot stand an advertising frame (which may cause problems when you submit your website to search engines). Whichever method is used, check that you're comfortable with the method.
Note that free web hosts without forced advertisements aren't necessarily good news. Without a viable means to recover the costs of running their server, many of them close with alarming frequency.
2. Amount of web space
Does it have enough space for your needs? If you envisage that you will expand your site eventually, you might want to cater for future expansion. Most sites use less than 5MB of web space. Indeed, at one time, one of my other web sites, thefreecountry.com, used less than 5MB of space although it had about 150 pages on the site. Your needs will vary, depending on how many pictures your pages use, whether you need sound files, video clips, etc.
3. FTP access
(In case you're wondering: What is FTP?)
Some free hosting providers only allow you to design your page with their online builder. While this is useful for beginners, do you have the option to expand later when you become experienced and their online page builder does not have the facility you need? FTP access, or at the very least, the ability to upload your pages by email or browser, is needed. Personally, I feel FTP access is mandatory, except for the most trivial site.
4. File type and size limitations
Watch out for these. Some free hosts impose a maximum size on each of the files you upload (including one with a low of 200KB). Other sites restrict the file types you can upload to HTML and GIF/JPG files. If your needs are different, eg, if you want to distribute your own programs on your pages, you will have to look elsewhere.
5. Reliability and speed of access
This is extremely important. A site that is frequently down will lose a lot of visitors. If someone finds your site on the search engine, and he tries to access it but find that it is down, he'll simply go down the list to find another site. Slow access is also very frustrating for visitors (and for you too, when you upload your site). How do you know if a host is reliable or fast? If you can't get feedback from anyone, one way is to try it out yourself over a period of time, both during peak as well as non-peak hours. After all, it is free, so you can always experiment with it.
6. Perl and PHP
(In case you're wondering: What is PHP and Perl?)
This is not particularly crucial nowadays for a free web host, since there are so many free script hosting services available that provide counters, search engines, forms, polls, mailing lists, etc, without requiring you to dabble with Perl or PHP scripts.
However if you really want to do it yourself, with the minimum of advertising banners from these free providers, you will need either PHP or Perl access. Note that it is not enough to know they provide PHP or Perl access: you need to know the kind of environment your scripts run under: is it so restrictive that they are of no earthly use? For PHP scripts, does your web host allow you to use the mail() function? For Perl scripts, do you have access to sendmail or its workalike?
7. Bandwidth allotment
Nowadays, many free web hosts impose a limit on the amount of traffic your website can use per day and per month. This means that if the pages (and graphic images) on your site is loaded by visitors beyond a certain number of times per day (or per month), the web host will disable your web site (or perhaps send you a bill). It is difficult to recommend a specific minimum amount of bandwidth, since it depends on how you design your site, your target audience, and the number of visitors you're able to attract to your site. In general, 100MB traffic per month is too little for anything other than your personal home page and 1-3GB traffic per month is usually adequate for a simple site just starting out. Your mileage, however, will vary.

Commercial Web Host

1. Reliability and speed of access
Not only should the web host be reliable and fast, it should guarantee its uptime (the time when it is functional). Look for a minimum uptime of 99%. In fact, even 99% is actually too low - it really should be 99.5% or higher. The host should provide some sort of refund (eg prorated refund or discount) if it falls below that figure. Note though that guarantees are often hard to enforce from your end - the host usually requires all sorts of documentation. However, without that guarantee, the web host will have little incentive to ensure that its servers are running all the time.
2. Data Transfer (Traffic/Bandwidth)
Data transfer (sometimes loosely referred to as "traffic" or "bandwidth") is the amount of bytes transferred from your site to visitors when they browse your site.
Don't believe any commercial web host that advertises "unlimited bandwidth". The host has to pay for the bandwidth, and if you consume a lot of it, they will not silently bear your costs. Many high bandwidth websites have found this out the hard way when they suddenly receive an exhorbitant bill for having "exceeded" the "unlimited bandwidth". Always look for details on how much traffic the package allows. I personally always stay clear of any host that advertises "unlimited transfer", even if the exact amount is specified somewhere else (sometimes buried in their policy statements). Usually you will find that they redefine "unlimited" to be limited in some way.
In addition, while bandwidth provided is something you should always check, do not be unduly swayed by promises of incredibly huge amounts of bandwidth. Chances are that your website will never be able to use that amount because it will hit other limits, namely resource limits. For more details, see the article The Fine Print in Web Hosting: Resource Usage Limits.
To give you a rough idea of the typical traffic requirements of a website, most new sites that are not software archives or the like use less than 3 GB of bandwidth per month. Your traffic requirements will grow over time, as your site becomes more well-known (and well-linked), so you will need to also check their policy for overages: is there a published charge per GB over the allowed bandwidth? Is the charge made according to actual usage or are you expected to pre-pay for a potential overage? It is better not to go for hosts that expect you to prepay for overages, since it is very hard to forsee when your site will exceed its bandwidth and by how much.
3. Disk space
For the same reason as bandwidth, watch out also for those "unlimited disk space" schemes. Most sites need less than 10 MB of web space, so even if you are provided with a host that tempts you with 200 MB or 500 MB (or "unlimited space"), be aware that you are unlikely to use that space, so don't let the 500 MB space be too big a factor in your consideration when comparing with other web hosts. The hosting company is also aware of that, which is why they feel free to offer you that as a means of enticing you to host there. As a rough gauge, thefreecountry.com, which had about 150 pages when this article was first written, used less than 5 MB for its pages and associated files.
4. Technical support
Does its technical support function 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (often abbreviated 24/7), all year around? Note that I will not accept a host which does not have staff working on weekends or public holidays. You will be surprised at how often things go wrong at the most inconvenient of times. Incidentally, just because a host advertises that it has 24/7 support does not necessarily mean that it really has that kind of support. Test them out by emailing at midnight and on Saturday nights, Sunday mornings, etc. Check out how long they take to respond. Besides speed of responses, check to see if they are technically competent. You wouldn't want to sign up for a host that is run by a bunch of salesmen who only know how to sell and not fix problems.
5. FTP, PHP, Perl, SSI, .htaccess, telnet, SSH, MySQL, crontabs
If you are paying for a site, you really should make sure you have all of these.
Note that some commercial hosts do not allow you to install PHP or Perl scripts ("What is PHP and Perl?") without their approval. This is not desirable since it means that you have to wait for them before you can implement a feature on your site. ".htaccess" is needed if you are to do things like customize your error pages (pages that display when, say, a user requests for a non-existent page on your site) or to protect your site in various ways (such as to prevent bandwidth theft and hotlinking, etc).
Telnet or SSH access is useful for certain things, including testing certain scripts (programs), maintaining databases, etc. MySQL is needed if you want to run a blog or a content management system. Cron is a type of program scheduler that lets you run programs at certain times of the day (eg, once a day). Check to see if these facilities are provided.
6. SSL (secure server), Shopping Cart
If you are planning on doing any sort of business through your website, you might want to look out to see if the host provides these facilities. These facilities normally involve a higher priced package or additional charges. The main thing is to check to see if they are available at all before you commit to the host. You will definitely need SSL if you want to collect credit card payments on your site.
7. Email, Autoresponders, POP3, Mail Forwarding
If you have your own site, you would probably want to have email addresses at your own domain, like sales@yourdomain.com, etc. Does the host provide this with the package? Does it allow you to have a catch-all email account that causes any email address at your domain to be routed to you? Can you set an email address to automatically reply to the sender with a preset message (called an autoresponder)? Can you retrieve your mail with your email software? Can it be automatically forwarded to your current email address?
8. Control Panel
This is called various names by different hosts, but essentially, they all allow you to manage different aspects of your web account yourself. Typically, and at the very minimum, it should allow you to do things like add, delete, and manage your email addresses, and change passwords for your account. I would not go for a host where I have to go through their technical support each time I want to change a password or add/delete an email account. Such chores are common maintenance chores that every webmaster performs time and time again, and it would be a great hassle if you had to wait for their technical support to make the changes for you.
9. Multiple Domain Hosting and Subdomains
For those who are thinking of selling web space or having multiple domains or subdomains hosted in your account, you should look to see if they provide this, and the amount extra that they charge for this (whether it is a one-time or monthly charge, etc).
10. Server
Is the type of operating system and server important? Whether you think so or not on the theoretical level, there are a few practical reasons for looking out for the type of server.
In general, if you want to use things like write/use ASP programs, you have no choice but to look for a Windows server.
Otherwise my preference is to sign up for accounts using the often cheaper, more stable and feature-laden Unix systems running the Apache server. In fact, if dynamically generated pages that can access databases (etc) is what you want, you can always use the more portable (and popular) PHP instead of tying yourself down to ASP. Another reason to prefer Unix-based web hosts (which include web hosts using systems like Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, etc) using the Apache web server is that these servers allow you to configure a lot of facilities that you typically need on your site (error pages, protecting your images, blocking email harvesters, blocking IP addresses, etc) without having to ask your web host to implement them. Knowledge about configuring Apache servers is also widely available, and can be found on.
11. Price
I was actually hesitant to list this, but I guess it's futile not to. However, I would caution that while price is always a factor, you should realise that you often get what you pay for, although it's not necessarily true that the most expensive hosts are the best.
12. Monthly/Quarterly/Annual Payment Plans
Most web hosts allow you to select an annual payment plan that gives you a cheaper rate than if you were to pay monthly. My current personal preference is to pay monthly with all new web hosts until I'm assured of their reliability and honesty. Paying monthly allows me to switch web hosts quickly when I find that the current host does not meet my requirements: this way, I'm not tied down to a bad web host because I have prepaid for an entire year. I do this even if the new web host guarantees that they will refund the balance if I'm dissatisfied, since at the point I sign up, I have no assurance that they will honour their guarantee. Later (usually after many months or even more than a year), when I'm satisfied with the host, I often change payment plans to the discounted annual plans.
13. Resellers?
Not all hosting companies own or lease their own web servers. Some of them are actually resellers for some other hosting company. The disadvantage of using a reseller is the possibility that you are dealing with people who don't know much about the system they are selling and who take longer to help you (they have to transmit your technical support request to the actual hosting company for it to be acted upon). However, this also depends on both the reseller and the underlying hosting company. It is thus wise not to rule out all resellers; there are a number of reliable and fast ones who are actually quite good and cheap. In fact, a number of resellers sell the same packages cheaper than their original hosting company. If you find out that a particular company is a reseller, you will need to investigate both the reseller and the real hosting company.
14. International
If you don't stay in the USA, you have the option of hosting your site with some local provider. The advantage here is the ease of dealing with them (they are after all easily accessible by phone call or a visit), your familiarity with the local laws and easy recourse to those laws should it be necessary. It should be your choice if your target audience is local (eg a local fast food delivery service). On the other hand, hosting it in USA has the advantage of faster access for what is probably the largest number of your overseas visitors (particularly if you have an English-speaking audience). You also have a large number of hosting companies to choose from, and as a result, cheaper prices too.
The Myth of the Perfect Commercial Host
In general, I doubt that there are any "perfect" web hosting companies around. Note that even if you are prepared to pay a huge price for your hosting needs, it does not guarantee that your host is any good. This is an interesting industry where a high price does not necessarily yield quality hosting and support.
On the other hand, one thing you can probably be sure of is that you will not get top-notched support if you only pay (say) $5 a month. At that price, which company can afford to hire enough good help to cater to all its users?
Like me, you'll probably end up settling for a trade-off between price, reliability and features that you're willing to live with.

Also you can choose from the best online web host from below links.

<

How to choose your domain name?

In the recent times, it is not easy to grab a domain name that has direct relation to the subject matter of the website. Availability of the top domain name suffices is the most important problem faced by the people looking to register a domain name. The truth is that the people searching for sites on internet have the tendency to give priority to the websites having top-level domain names like a.com and a.net. Most of the average surfers believe that the sites with these suffixes are more reliable. They also think that these sites have more authority and credibility.

If you have website promoting your own products or services, you must somehow try to get the top-level names for your domain, as it will help you create trustworthiness among the customers. As the customer beliefs and thoughts are in favor of these top-level names, they can act as one of the strongest sales tools.

The various search engines will consider your domain names while doing the search engine rankings. The domain name and the site content must have a clear relation so that your site will be featured in the searches done by the clients in major search engines like yahoo and Google. There are some tips to follow to get hold of a top-level domain name. While checking the availability of the domain name, you can try the plural version of key phrase. However, at most cases when the singular version is not available so will be the plural one.

Another trick get top-level name for your domain is by adding numbers. It has been extremely effective in getting the top domain names. You can even add the numbers in the body of the domain name like replacing to with the number 2. You can also go for the substitution of words like the word 'you' with the letter 'u'. When you are registering a domain name, you must understand that the clients will always be looking for the websites with top-level names.

Next time you are searching for a good domain name, try it because, remember, your customer will always look for a .com website first!

Step 1
Write down the name of your business. Remembering that short and sweet domain names are the easiest to remember, create a list of possible names using your business name (for example, smithauto.com, smauto.com, smitheys.com).
Step 2
Create a list of services your business provides and a list of possible names from those services (for example, autorepair.com, fixcar.com, brokedown.com).
Step 3
Use catchphrases from your brochure and other promotional materials to create additional possibilities.
Step 4
For personal domain names, use your name, your pet's name, your hobbies, your surname or even your child's name.
Step 5
Visit the Whois Web site (www.whois.org). Using Whois, you can type in your favorite picks and see if they're taken and by whom. If they are taken, keep trying with your alternate choices.
Step 6
Use other organizational suffixes, such as .net or .org, if the .com name is taken. However, since users randomly searching for your site may be directed to the .com site first, .net and .org names are usually best for personal rather than business domain names.
Step 7
If you're really set on using a domain name that has been taken, contact the owner of that domain name by checking the Administrative Contact section on the Whois site. Domain-name owners sometimes sell domain names they don't use.

Google Ranking "SEO"

Got SEO Stats?
The Fastest And Easiest Way To Monitor All Your SEO Stats In One Place! For example, if your page has 100 quality links leading to it, it will rank higher than another page that has only 20 links pointing at it. Quality links come from pages that are themselves "important" (Google's own terminology).
Note that this is not a secret. Google actually publishes information about their ranking algorithm on their website. You can read it for yourself at http://www.google.com/technology/.
How to improving Your Page Rank on Google?
There are numerous tips floating around in webmaster circles about how to improve your ranking in search engine results on Google.
1. Get Those Inbound Links
Since Google ranks your pages according to the number of links pointing at your page, it stands to reason that you should try to get as many links pointing at your pages as possible. This is so obvious that I'm only mentioning it for completeness sake.
2. Your Title Tag
Google seems to give weight to the title of your page. By title, I mean the text that is sandwiched between the HTML TITLE tags in the section of your web page. If you use a Web editor that automatically inserts a title like "New Page", remember to change it to some meaningful text with your keywords inside to reap the benefit of this feature.
3. Content-Laden Pages (Keyword Density)
It has often been observed that Google considers keyword density a large factor in ranking pages in search engine results, more so than many other search engines.
4. Keyword-laden Links?
According to a paper published by one of Google's founders, if the links pointing to your page has the relevant keyword text in them, it will cause your page to be ranked higher in search engine results. For example, a link with the text "Cheap Shoe Store" pointing at your site will cause your site to be listed earlier if a visitor searches for "cheap shoe store" than if the link simply said "click here".
Other Google Tips

1. Will Disabling Caching of Your Page Affect Your Page Rank?
Some time ago, it was claimed that Google would penalise pages that forbade it from caching their pages. As you know, Google caches the pages it indexes unless otherwise instructed. To avoid problems with people who feel that this is a copyright infringement (and other reasons), they allow sites to instruct the Google spider not to cache those pages using various means.
Google has apparently publicly denied that disabling caching would affect the page's ranking in any way. I tend to believe their claim.
2. Dynamic Pages and Google
Unlike some other search engines, Google is able to index dynamically generated pages, so long as a link exist to those pages somewhere. For example, a page like "http://example.com/showstuff.php?page=19" can be indexed by Google.
So if you have a dynamically generated page that you think should be indexed, make sure you put a link to it somewhere on your site.
3. ALT tags on Images
If you have been placing images on your website without bothering to place ALT tags, now is a good time to add ALT tags. Google apparently indexes the text given in the ALT tags of images.
4. META Keywords Tag is Ignored
Google ignores the META keywords tag, so, the optimization of this tag is not going to help you any with Google.
The Google Toolbar
The Google Toolbar can be obtained free of charge for Firefox and Internet Explorer. It gives you an idea of how important Google thinks your site is (in general) by showing the Page Rank of any page that you visit.
Unfortunately, to obtain the page rank of the pages you visit, the toolbar actually transmits information about the pages you visit to Google. Thus if you are worried about people tracking your Internet activity, you might want to restrict its use to times when you check your site's ranking. You can easily enable or disable the Page Rank feature from its Options menu.

How YOU Can Go...
From This: 19 random visitors a dayTo This: Averaging 12,783 visitors a day

Make Money With Affiliate Marketing

Spite many industries laying off thousands of workers or even outright shutting their doors in today's tough economic climate, there is one industry that is thriving and helping thousands of regular people make money. Some hard workers are even replacing the income they earned at their regular jobs, allowing them to walk away from the 9-5 work day for good and work from home on a full-time basis. What is this industry? Affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing programs are simple by nature: They work by rewarding marketers for promoting products online. The affiliates are then compensated on a commission basis. Basically, affiliates get paid each time they refer new customers to the website of the company they are promoting. Becoming an affiliate is one of the most lucrative online money-making opportunities out there, and the breadth of products that can be promoted as an affiliate is staggering. Affiliate marketing creates a cost-effective option for big and small companies alike to reach out and expose their products to a much larger audience of potential buyers. Instead of being limited to just one large website, companies of any size can now offer an affiliate program and have their products promoted on hundreds or even thousands of individual sites, at no upfront cost to them. Likewise, the affiliate marketing industry also provides a virtually unlimited source for income for those who aggressively promote offers. Affiliates have been continually reaping the rewards of larger profits as the affiliate marketing industry continues to grow in popularity. Affiliates can easily earn anywhere from 30-90% of the profits from each sale that comes from customers they refer, and with some affiliate programs offering recurring monthly payouts for their products, the earning potential becomes even higher. CPA marketing, in which affiliates can earn money just for referring traffic and having visitors do as little as fill out a short form, without even making a purchase, is the latest hot trend in affiliate marketing, and promises to keep the industry highly profitable and exciting for many years to come. Unlike other businesses, there are no specific criteria for becoming an affiliate, other than a commitment to work hard and some knowledge of Internet marketing and how to go about researching and promoting the best offers for maximum profitability.
